Again, Nancy and George picked us up for touring. We have had such a great time with them and they have been excellent guides. Thank you Both.
The very historic Old Mission of The Sacred Heart served as a learning center and home for the Coeur d' Alene Indians. It had many purposes, such as hospital, hotel, mail order supplies, post office, etc. It was originally on the St. Joe River in 1842 but was moved to Cataldo due to flooding. It still overlooks the Coeur d' Alene River valley.
It was built by the Jesuit Priests and the Coeur d' Alene Indian Tribe. It is known to be the oldest standing building in Idaho. It was designated an Idaho State Park in 1975.
The confessional...The confessor kneeled here. The Priest sat on this side...
The two side alters...
A look back from the alter.
A big cherry tree sits between the Mission and the Parish House. It is full of cherries.
Here is a little history of the Parish House....
This was a very peaceful and serene place. It makes you realize how hard people worked back in the 1800s.
