We started our day with a tour of an Amish house and farm. The Amish live very simply as you will see in the pictures.
They are very Christian who live by the rules of their Churches.
Our tour guide in the center of the picture. He was very knowledgeable.
Their main room/living room is where they meet for church services...for a community of about 20 families.
Each family usually have 7-8 kids...
The kitchen. They have a frig, stove and lamps which are run on propane of gas.
No electricity anywhere in the house.
No closets in the house. They hang clothes in their rooms on wall hooks.
The propane lamp....
The modern propane stove and.... The old wood burning stove.
They make their own clothes. Girls are taught at a very young age to sew.
Babies wear this outfit until they are potty trained. Young boys outfits.
They make all their beautiful quilts... Usually there are two or three beds in one bedroom.
Young girls outfits.
Everyone wears black shoes. The white shoes are used when they go out in the real world to see if they will stay in the Amish community or not.
Girls wear black skirts most of the time and when they marry, they wear white aprons.
The suite on the left is worn by the groom on his wedding day.
The master bedroom.
These homes have two stories and a basement....
A look down at the barn...
The laundry room is in the basement.
A look back at the main house.
The barns have multiple uses....
These sheep are very well maintained...chubby!
Oops! the mule!
Water systems are usually close to the barn and gardens.
A look back at the barn area.
These wagons are used for families...
These are mostly used by Boys and Girls, especially when they are courting. They have open buggies.
We were finally able to get in one of these buggies....pretty cramped.
The one-room School House....
Before you enter.....the "Enter to Learn" sign catches your eye.
The smaller desks are up at the front as children of all ages attend this same school at the same time.
The chair at the very front, of course, for the class clown!
As you exit...Exit to Serve! Note the rope for the School Bell.
A view back at the farm...
Quite a bit of walking but it has been a beautiful day. We woke up to the high 50s. Cool!
Visiting and reminiscing at the Blacksmith Shop.
The reflection pond by the bridge.
Tiny apples....
Back on the country roads of Pennsylvania! Beautiful!
We thought we would not see any Amish activity today, Sunday, since it is a day of rest.
All of the buggies we saw today were young people.....this boy carries three girls with him.
These two must be courting....all dressed up on a Sunday ride to town on the open buggy.
A tour buggy.
These are family buggies but it looks like young kids in it....
Some of the buggies are really packed.... this girl waved to us which is uncommon.
This cute couple is probably courting...The girl also waved and gave us a big smile.
We have had a great day so far.....more to come.
