While we have been here in St. Augustine, we have heard a lot said about this bridge which has been under restoration for the past 5 years. Today, St. Patrick's Day, was the grand opening/ribbon cutting ceremony of the Bridge of Lions. The bridge is 75 years old and is a historic landmark. It spans the Matanzas River between St. Augustine and Anastasia Island.
They have made a walkway so pedestrians can walk across the bridge. It is still a two way bridge (one lane over and one lane back).
It looks really nice.
The pair of marble Lions that go here, are still being restored....
This is the temporary bridge built in 2005 while they restored the Bridge of Lions.
This temporary draw bridge will be taken down to allow the Bridge of Lions to stand alone.
Earlier in the week, we traveled across to the Island via the temporary bridge, which stands along side the Bridge of Lions.
Seems like they are testing the draw bridge area.
On our way back to St. Augustine.
This will be a beautiful site once they remove all the construction signs and equipment.
There is a lot of traffic on this old bridge. Traffic will not be alleviated since the bridge will be a two way bridge.
A view of the marina....
We have enjoyed our time here in St. Augustine. We highly recommend this area.
