Today we waited for Janet and George to arrive from Red Bay, AL and then we were off to visit the Shiloh National Military Park. In this Civil War, the Federal Forces, commanded by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, and the Confederate Forces, commanded by Gen A.S. Johnson, were battling over southern Tennessee. There were about 10K in the Confederate Army and about 13K in the Federal Force killed. This was only a 2 day battle but it was very intense. There is a lot of history here and wish I could explain it all. Here are some pictures of this beautiful park that holds so much history. We visited the Visitors Center Museum and then watched a 30 minute movie.
We took the driving self-tour.
Our fist stop was at the U.S. National Cemetery. Only two of the Confederate soldiers are buried here.
The shorter tombstones are those of unidentified soldiers.
Today we had temperatures in the 100s so we found every shade we could to rest.
A picture of a small replica found in the bookstore.
and another.....
Beautiful monuments representing different battalions and infantries from different states.
The Mississippi River along the park.
Janet takes a picture of the Michigan monument. She is originally from Michigan.
Michigan....
These monuments and statues are beautiful....
Most of the Confederate monuments only had the cannons and cannon balls....
A lot of artillery used here.
The Shiloh Cemetery....
They hold services in this church every Sunday.
The Confederate soldiers were buried in a mass grave...there are several in the park.
The tour was about 2 hours and we were hungry by the time we were done so we headed to Doris's Diner for dinner.
The food was good and the company was GREAT! After dinner, we headed out to Pickwick Dam for a look.
